Student Council is a formal meeting where students have the opportunity to speak out about the issues they face in college.
By turning up the volume during Student Council we can make sure that your voice gets heard! How it Works... Student reps get elected in class or by clicking the 'become a rep' button on the Student Rep Page, all the student reps for each department (normally between 2-10) then elect one of their department reps as a student councillor.
Who's Responsible For What?
Student Reps are responsible for passing on relevant information from student feedback and learner voice meetings to the Student Councillor from their department - this informs the Councillors and influences their voting.
Student Councillors are responsible for representing their department during Student Council and making decisions (through voting) on behalf of their department.
All (and any) students and reps are welcome to attend council, although only Councillors are given the power to vote.
During Student Council the Students' Union Officers will chair the meeting and the Student Voice Officer will minute it.
Discussion points focus on identifying cross college issues, for example: A Councillor from Health & Social Care has received feedback from their student reps that the refectory is too expensive. The reps from Public Service have said the same thing to their Councillor. This matter affects more than one department so it can be addressed as a cross college issue.
Make it your choice!
#Turn Up The Volume!
Issues that cannot be dealt with within a curriculum area are classed as cross college issues. Student Council is solely for the purpose of dealing with and resolving cross college issues.
Below are some examples of cross college issues and department issues; This should help you know what to talk about during Student Council:
Cross College: More than one department reports the same issue:
The smoking area is too small, The LRC isn't open for long enough, There aren't enough computers in classrooms.
These type of issues can be brought to council and the Students' Union Officers will be held accountable for making positive changes around the highlighted issues.
Departmental: Only relates to one department:
My teacher is sometimes late, Behaviour in classrooms is poor, There aren't enough support workers.
These types of issues should not be brought to council. They should be dealt with in Learner Voice Meetings or by talking to tutors.
